Kaboom Books is a used bookstore with two locations: One in Woodland Heights, the other in Houston Heights, each within blocks of the other and both just immediately above Downtown Houston.
For 30 years we had a succession of bookshops in New Orleans, in the back of the French Quarter. Now we are in Houston. Our purpose here is the same as it had been there, which is to provide an inventory of ideas and to act as a sounding board for social discourse within, now, the confines of Houston's hundreds of neighborhoods.
Our stock of 100,000 books ranges from current to long out-of-print titles. In contradistinction to the two or three transformative ideas I typically come up with each morning between breakfast and when I open the shop, all of our books are used. There are 76 different sections, principally Fiction, Literature in its various guises, Art, History and Social and Physical Sciences. Each of these has many sub-sets, although we try to stay somewhat North of "Left-handed Romanian women writers of the latter half of the 20 th Century" as a level of organization.
If you tire of looking for books by sitting at home, hunched over your keyboard in your underwear, watching type trickle down the screen, come by and have a browse. Put something more on before you come though. As Lord Buckley said, "You can't do anything without your pants on."
Join us on the patio of the Houston Ave. shop for the events we regularly schedule there.
